Engraved frontispiece, title page vignette, 2 part titles, portrait, and 103 plates, head and tail pieces etc. Intermittent dampstaining mostly towards the end.

Album Vénitien dessiné d’après natur par les plus habiles artistes. Venise [Venice], J. A. Habnit, [ca. 1844]. Oblong folio. (27 × 39,5 cm.) Original half brown cloth over greyish boards with pictorial vignette title to upper cover.
Title page with coloured vignette (repeat of upper cover) and 10 hand-coloured lithographed plates within decorative borders, each captioned and with the publisher’s blind stamp beneath, original tissue guards. Occasional minor foxing and staining mainly to the margins, title page slightly poorer with a couple of short tears, binding rather rubbed and worn. The plates themselves are generally nice and fresh with good colour. Old markings would indicate that this album has always comprised title and ten plates, but one can find citings of the same title with 12 and with 20 plates. Typically these sort of albums were assembled to order.

Haines, Liverpool in full red morocco. Portrait to verso of title. Ex libris Allan Heywood Bright with his pictorial bookplate including star and crescent motif replicated in gilt on both covers.
A description of the objects observed by Symeoni on his journey through France and Italy in 1557 and the relationship between words and images as found on such ancient sculptures and artefacts. – Siehe Abbildung.

Title page woodcuts in each volume by Cranach the Younger (Luther and Elector Johann Friedrich of Saxony kneeling before the Crucifix), World Map in vol. 2 „Daniel’s Dream Map” (cf. Shirley 65) and large woodcuts in vol. 9 reworking Cranach’s „Papstesel und Mönchskalb”. Contemporary bindings. – Text collated complete. On the title-pages of all 12 volumes appears the 17th-century inscription of Johann Paul Schnabel. – Vols. 1–6: All six bindings are dated 1570. – Vols. 7–12: These six volumes belong to the first Wittenberg edition of the 12-volume Luther „Werke” and were bound in Wittenberg by Matthias Juncker (vol. 7) and Hans Cantzler (vols. 8–12) and were apparently bound in the same year, or in the following year, as the date of publication. – Vol. 7: Bound in the workshop of Matthias Juncker the Elder, active ca. 1537 to the late 1550’s. Vol. 8–12: Bound in the workshop of Hans Cantzler (d. 1580), who became „Ratsherr” in 1564 and owned one of the largest workshops of his time.
